Could you and your family survive without a paycheck if you were out of work due to an injury or illness? Disability insurance is essentially “paycheck” insurance, replacing some of your income if you cannot work due to a non-work-related injury or illness.
To help our colleagues protect their financial well-being, Alera Group provides company-paid disability insurance for benefit-eligible colleagues.
You are automatically enrolled in coverage.
Short-Term Disability (STD) Insurance
STD benefits provide a weekly benefit when you are unable to work due to an injury or illness unrelated to work. If you remain disabled and meet the plan’s disability requirements, you continue to receive a percentage of your earnings until the benefit duration has ended. Any STD benefits payments you receive are considered taxable income.

Additional Details
- Although Alera Group pays 100% of the premiums for LTD insurance, you are responsible for the tax on those premiums (benefit payments to you are tax-free if you become disabled). Your estimated tax is based on your salary and overall personal tax situation and is reflected in your W-2 as taxable income. This amount is applied to your first paycheck following your effective date of coverage. You cannot opt out of paying the tax. Please speak with your tax accountant or financial advisor if you have questions about this.
- If you qualify for disability benefits, you may also qualify for the Family and Medical Leave Act. See the Leaves of Absence page for details.
You can submit Leave of Absence requests and Disability Insurance claims through Unum’s Total Leave platform. (For Leaves of Absence and Disability Insurance claims that started before October 1, 2023, continue to log in through your current Unum account.)
