For Alera Group medical, dental and vision coverage and other insurance benefits that require a colleague contribution, there are limitations on when you can choose your benefits and update your benefits choices through the Alera Group Benefits Center.
- Within 30 days of your new hire date: You can choose benefits within 30 days of becoming eligible, usually as a new hire. The benefit elections you make during your initial enrollment period as a new hire become effective the first of the month following your date of hire and remain in effect through the end of the calendar year.
- During Open Enrollment: You can choose and update your benefits elections during Open Enrollment which is typically held in the fall each year. The benefit elections you make during Open Enrollment become effective on the next January 1 and remain in effect through the end of the calendar year.
- Within 30 days of a qualifying life event: You may make certain changes to some benefits elections only if you have a qualifying life event such as marriage, birth/adoption, divorce/legal separation, change in dependent eligibility, loss of coverage, spouse’s gain or loss of employment, or court action. To update your benefits, you must complete and submit supporting documentation (e.g., a marriage or birth/adoption certificate) within 30 days of the qualifying life event. Proof of the event is subject to approval by Alera Group.
You can start or change your 401(k) Retirement Savings Plan contributions at any time directly through Principal.
