Critical Illness Insurance

None of us can predict when an unexpected health issue might touch our lives. If you’re injured or diagnosed with a serious illness, critical illness insurance can help cover expenses while you focus on your recovery.

The Basics

How It Works

Your medical coverage helps with your health care needs.

Critical illness insurance is different because it provides a lump sum cash payment to you for certain covered illnesses.

What’s Covered

The plan offers coverage for illnesses like:

  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Skin cancer
  • Alzheimer’s disease

No medical questionnaires are required, but benefits may be subject to a pre-existing condition provision. See the Critical Illness Summary for more details.

What It Pays

You can choose between two amounts
of coverage:

  • $10,000
  • $20,000

You can use the cash to pay for anything
you want. See the Critical Illness Summary for more details.

Your Coverage Details

EMPLOYEE
You can elect either $10,000 or $20,000 in coverage.
SPOUSE/DOMESTIC PARTNER
You can enroll your spouse at 50% of your employee coverage.
CHILDREN
If you enroll yourself, your children up to age 26 are automatically covered at no additional cost. Their coverage is 50% of yours.

Your Paycheck Costs

Premiums for coverage depend on the benefit amount you select, your age and whether you are a tobacco user. You will see the amounts when you enroll through the Alera Group Benefits Center. You pay the full cost for this coverage through after-tax payroll deductions.

How to File a Claim

If you are diagnosed with a covered illness, you can file a claim through your MyUnum for Members online account or the MyUnum for Members mobile app. See How to File a Claim for details.
