Your income is one of your most valuable assets. If you can’t work because of an illness or injury, disability insurance replaces a portion of your pay to help cover expenses, so you can focus on getting better. Alera Group automatically provides Short-Term Disability (STD) and Long-Term Disability (LTD) insurance at no cost to colleagues.
STD benefits begin after 7 days of illness or injury. If you’re still unable to work after 90 days, LTD coverage will begin.
Disability insurance pays if you can’t work because of an illness or injury, such as joint disorders, cancer, digestive disorders, recovery from surgery, and pregnancy.
LTD benefits are subject to pre-existing condition limitations for newly covered colleagues.
You receive 60% of your pre-disability income (up to $2,500 per week) when you’re ill or injured and unable to work.
The cost of STD insurance is covered by Alera Group, but you pay taxes on any STD payments you receive. Here’s how the coverage works.
* May be offset by other sources of income.
Alera Group covers the full cost of LTD insurance, but you’re responsible for the tax on those premiums. (This amount is included in your W-2 and applied to your first paycheck after coverage begins.) Any LTD payments you receive are tax-free. Here’s how the coverage works.
* May be offset by other sources of income.
You can submit Disability Insurance claims (and Leave of Absence requests) through Unum’s Total Leave platform. If you qualify for disability benefits, you may also qualify for the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). See the Leaves of Absence page for details.
