Making Changes During the Year

If you have a qualifying life event during the year, you may be able to update your elections within 30 days of the event through the Alera Group Benefits Center.

Your Coverage Details

Qualifying Life Events

Depending on the situation, you can add dependents, drop dependents, enroll in, change, or cancel your coverage. You must provide supporting documentation, which is subject to approval by Alera Group.

Qualifying life events include:

  • Birth, legal adoption of a child, or placement of a child with you for legal adoption
  • Loss of other coverage
  • Gain of other coverage
  • A covered dependent child turns age 26
  • Change in residence (if your current coverage isn’t available in the new location or if you are offered an option that you were not previously offered)
  • Divorce, legal separation, or the end of a domestic partnership
  • Death of your spouse, domestic partner, or dependent child
NOT Qualifying Life Events

These are not considered qualifying life events:

  • Voluntary choices and changes (example: voluntarily canceling your health plan)
  • Coverage-related issues (example: loss of coverage because of non-payment of premiums)
  • Gaining voluntary guardianship of a dependent
  • Ending participation in a Medical Cost Sharing Group
