Sometimes you need time away from work to care for yourself or your family. Alera Group offers Leave of Absence options, so you can focus on what matters most. Typically, you’ll request a Leave of Absence when you need more than just a few days away from work.
You can take a leave of absence for a variety of reasons, including:
Alera Group offers a variety of leave options to help you care for yourself and your family. The amount of leave available depends on the type of leave. The type of leave also determines whether you have job protection and if the leave replaces income.
Alera Group provides up to 12 weeks of Paid Family Leave for bonding with a new child, caring for a family member, and military exigency or caregiving of a covered servicemember.
Alera Group offers a variety of leave options to help you care for yourself or your family. Keep in mind that if you are taking more than one leave at a time, the leaves run concurrently. Refer to the Alera Group Colleague Handbook for more information.
In addition to leave options, Alera Group automatically provides Short-Term Disability (STD) and Long-Term Disability (LTD) insurance at no cost to colleagues.
UNPAID / JOB PROTECTION
FMLA provides up to 12 weeks (or 26 weeks, if applicable) of unpaid, job-protected leave in a 12-month period for certain family and medical reasons. Those reasons include welcoming a new child, caring for an immediate family member with a serious health condition, and if you are unable to work because of a serious health condition.

Unlike FMLA, you cannot use Paid Family Leave for your own serious health needs.
UNPAID / NO JOB PROTECTION
If you’re not eligible for FMLA, you may be able to take a Personal Leave of Absence for up to 60 consecutive calendar days in a rolling 12-month period. Personal Leave is granted at Alera Group’s discretion and typically requires you to use any available paid time off before moving to unpaid leave.
UNPAID / JOB PROTECTION
If you’re called to active duty, you’re eligible for military leave. When you return, you’ll be reinstated to your previous or a similar job.
UNPAID / JOB PROTECTION
You can take unpaid leave for time missed while serving as a member of the Civil Air Patrol.
PAID / JOB PROTECTION
You’re eligible for up to 10 days of paid leave per year for witness leave. If you need more than 10 days, you can use vacation or flexible time off.

You can take unpaid leave to attend judicial proceedings if you or an immediate family member is a victim of a crime.

If you serve as an election official, judge or worker, you can take unpaid leave for registration, required training, and Election Day duties.

If you’re a volunteer emergency worker (such as a member of a fire department, first responder, or ambulance driver), Alera Group will not discipline or terminate you for absence or tardiness. Please make a reasonable effort to notify your manager if you’ll be late to work or absent.
Request your leave of absence 30 days before you expect to be on leave, if you can. First, submit a Zendesk ticket via ARCH with the leave of absence request. Then, submit your leave request and Disability Insurance claims through Unum’s Total Leave platform. You can also live chat and schedule a callback through the portal, if you need support.
