Individual Disability Insurance

While Alera Group provides company-paid group Long-Term Disability (LTD) coverage, colleagues earning over $100,000 can purchase additional coverage. Individual Disability Insurance (IDI) through Unum lets you cover more of your income, including bonuses and commissions, if you’re unable to work because of an illness or injury.

The Basics

How It Works

Colleagues earning over $100,000 can elect IDI coverage during a special enrollment period. If you meet the criteria and enroll, you will receive your company-paid group LTD benefit plus an additional benefit of up to $15,000 per month.

What’s Covered

IDI protects up to 70% of your total compensation (including salary, bonuses, and commissions). Coverage for partial disability is also included.

What It Pays

IDI provides up to an additional $15,000 per month in coverage, which can help protect you and your family.

IDI Open Enrollment for 2026

Open Enrollment for this supplemental coverage is from May 11-22, 2026. Enrollment is possible only one time a year, so don’t miss your opportunity.

Good to Know

Here are a few important things to know about IDI: 

  • You don’t have to answer health questions or undergo medical underwriting to be approved for coverage.
  • Benefits are tax-free.
  • Coverage is portable — meaning you can take it with you if you leave Alera Group.
  • Coverage lasts until age 67 (or 2 years, whichever is longer).
  • You can apply for coverage, with no medical underwriting, only during the special enrollment period. If you are eligible for the benefit, you will be notified when the enrollment period is approaching. You can terminate your coverage at any time.

Your Paycheck Costs

IDI coverage through Unum features discounted pricing, and your premium stays the same even as you age or change roles. Premiums for coverage are deducted from your paycheck after taxes.
