I’m Welcoming a New Child

Welcoming a new child to your family — through birth, surrogacy, or adoption — can be exciting and intense. This helpful checklist can help ease some of the stress.

Take Care

Prenatal care is crucial for a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. All our Alera Group medical plans offer comprehensive prenatal and maternity care. If you need help finding an in-network OB/GYN for yourself or your covered spouse/domestic partner, reach out to Included Health or search for an in-network provider online.

All our medical plans also offer healthy pregnancy programs with support for pregnant moms through each step of the pregnancy, delivery, and post-partum journey. Access your medical plan’s prenatal program by calling the number on the back of your medical ID card.

Take Time

When it’s time to welcome your new child, take time off to bond with a Leave of Absence

If you delivered your child, Short-Term Disability (STD) covers 60% of your pre-disability income to a maximum of $2,500 per week for six to eight weeks (depending on your delivery method). In some states, you can take up to 12 work weeks of paid leave for bonding. Remember: FMLA protects your job for up to 12 weeks for birth or adoption, so you can take the time you need without worrying about work. All colleagues who have been employed for at least one year and completed at least 1,250 hours of service during the 12-month period immediately preceding the start of a leave are eligible. For more information on Alera Group’s Paid Leave Policy, see the Alera Group Colleague Handbook, page 46.

Remember to request your leave through Unum’s Total Leave platform at least 30 days before your due date or placement date.

Change

Welcoming a new child is a qualified life event. This means you can make relevant updates to your Alera Group benefits, but you must make those updates within 30 days of welcoming your child.

Consider these changes:

  • Add your child to your medical, dental or vision coverage.
  • Add voluntary life insurance coverage for your child.
  • Update your contributions to your Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) to reflect expected expenses.

Go to the Alera Group Benefits Center within 30 days. (You may be required to submit documentation.)
